Who pays whom

  • Noura owes you80.00 SAR
  • Fahd owes you80.00 SAR

Splitaha records balances and settlements only; the money moves outside the app. To save groups and track balances with other people you need an account inside the app.

How to use the calculator

  1. 1

    Enter the bill

Type the total exactly as it is printed on the bill, including VAT and service charge if there are any.

  2. 2

Set the people and who paid

From two to eight people, and you can rename them. Pick who paid the bill and the transfers point to them.

  3. 3

    Pick how to split

Equally, by exact amounts for each person, by percentages, or by shares.

  4. 4

    Read the result

You see each person's share and the fewest transfers that settle the bill. If the numbers do not close, the calculator tells you how much is left over or over.

One example for each split method

Every figure below comes from the same calculation engine that runs the calculator above. In each example you paid the bill.

Equally

A 240.00 SAR dinner between 3 people, and you paid the bill.

PersonBasisShare
YouEqual part80.00 SAR
NouraEqual part80.00 SAR
FahdEqual part80.00 SAR
  • Noura owes you: 80.00 SAR
  • Fahd owes you: 80.00 SAR

The bill is divided by the number of people. If it does not divide evenly, the leftover halalas are handed out as described in the rounding section below.

By exact amounts

A 300.00 SAR bill where everyone ordered something different, so you type in each person's amount.

PersonBasisShare
You150.00 SAR150.00 SAR
Noura100.00 SAR100.00 SAR
Fahd50.00 SAR50.00 SAR
  • Noura owes you: 100.00 SAR
  • Fahd owes you: 50.00 SAR

The amounts must add up to the bill exactly. If they do not, the calculator shows the difference.

By percentage

A 400.00 SAR bill split by percentages you agree on.

PersonBasisShare
You50%200.00 SAR
Noura30%120.00 SAR
Fahd20%80.00 SAR
  • Noura owes you: 120.00 SAR
  • Fahd owes you: 80.00 SAR

The percentages must add up to 100%. Each percentage is turned into a whole number of halalas, with no decimal fractions.

By shares

A 360.00 SAR bill where whoever ate more or stayed longer takes more shares.

Noura1 share90.00 SAR
Fahd1 share90.00 SAR
  • Noura owes you: 90.00 SAR
  • Fahd owes you: 90.00 SAR

Each person pays their shares out of the total number of shares.

How rounding to the halala works

A riyal is a hundred halalas and you cannot pay part of a halala. When a bill does not divide evenly there are halalas left over, and they have to go whole to someone so that the shares add up to the bill exactly.

The engine works out each person's exact share and gives everyone the whole-halala part. It then hands the leftover halalas out one at a time to the people with the largest remaining fraction. If they tie, the person listed first takes it, so the same input always gives the same answer.

For example, a 100.00 SAR bill between 3 people gives these shares, which add up to 100.00 SAR.

  • You: 33.34 SAR
  • Noura: 33.33 SAR
  • Fahd: 33.33 SAR

What the calculator does not do

  • It saves nothing. Close the page and the numbers you typed are gone.
  • It is not a group ledger: no groups, no history, no balances that build up across several expenses.
  • It does not move money. It only tells you who owes whom, and the payment happens outside the app.
  • It works in Saudi riyals only. 49 currencies (including SAR) with conversion are part of Splitaha Pro in the app.

If you want to keep groups, record settlements and follow balances over time, that is what the Splitaha app is built for.

Calculator questions

Is the calculator free?
Yes, free and with no sign-up. The numbers you type stay in your browser and we do not store them.
Should I add VAT and service charge before splitting?
Yes. Enter the final total as it appears on the bill. In the app you can add tax, service charge and a discount to an expense.
When should I use exact amounts, percentages or shares?
Use exact amounts when everyone knows what they owe, percentages when you agree on fixed portions, and shares when portions depend on participation, such as someone who stayed two nights against one.
How many people does it support?
From two to eight people, for an amount above zero and below 100,000 SAR.
Does the calculator transfer money between people?
No. It only works out who owes whom. You pay each other however suits you.
